I wasn't aware we had a policy of preventing folks from posting on the open threads....seems kind of commie to me.
While I agree a good deal of the recent activity has served no purpose other than idle amusement, I cannot condone anyone trying to suppress the free speech of fellow students. It's just not right....not in my mind anyway. _________________ -Dashing Dashboard Dave Often "The Big O"

I'll agree with Dave in the whole "Free speech for all!" thing, but too be honest, the WUML board isn't like a normal message board, as in, its not for "What's your favorite food?," "Why my shoes smell," or "I'm sad, here's a poem I wrote about it."
We do business here.
Sure, we can go off topic every once in a while, but the overflow of threads is killing me.
I end up missing important things, like Wilty's threads, because I'm too tired after going through all the bullshit to give it a good once over.
Plus, it sucks that after being away for 1 freaking day, there's a TON of shit to "catch up on."
It makes the board tedious.
It may "bring us together" or whatever, but DAMN. _________________ "This is a shit idea. You know why? Because it's really obviously a shit idea." |

then lets keep the off topic stuff to the general broadcast area.
and if something is really important, make it a sticky, or create a new thread.
i dont see the point in NOT utilizing the board for communication... whether its important or not. _________________ http://www.audioscrobbler.com/user/chriskiley/ |

Or you could make your own forum for such things and keep this one neat and tidy.
Or, hey, use the telephone. Its old school, but gets the job done. _________________ "This is a shit idea. You know why? Because it's really obviously a shit idea." |

But the point is, this board was originally created so alumni and directors could communicate about the Lowell Sun ordeal. It had a very specific focus. It has grown since then, but all of the growth has been business orientated. _________________ GM- 2002-2003

first off: nate is right.
before we moved to wuml.org, the board was on my website, at wjul.shoegaze.net, because i had php capabilities and the old site did not.
it was, in fact, created so alumni could give us advice on the lowell sun issue, and other sections (like this one) were created as we realized we might want to talk about something other than the sun every now and then.
since the vast majority of newer board members don't have access to that part of forum yet (where almost as much discussion about business usually occurs as does in the public forums about everything else), it's probably easy to think that if you can't see those forums, and nobody's posted much in the public forums (like this one), the board must be dead.
i can easily see how tripling the volume of posts in the public forums can make for an insane reading load for folks who have to keep up to date by reading the business forums as part of their job as a dj, director, or alumni, and really piss them off.
that said.
<analytical hippie love bullshit>
i think the problem is that certain folk are in love with the messageboard, as opposed to being in love with the station, and by proxy, the messageboard that lets us get to know one another.
that's what i was trying to say waayy back when, when nobody listened, about how yes, this is an internet messageboard, but first and foremost, it's a place where people who actually know each other in real life can leave messages to each other at convenient times.
i don't have a problem with the threads about power rangers, or the red sox, or any of that shit.
i'm pro-hearing about what you guys did on halloween if you didn't come to the party.
i think those are good icebreaker topics that help interns and djs and alumni get to know each other, and it's stuff people are actually interested in dedicating time to reading, and would discuss if we all had time to sit around a room together.
which is how most people see this messageboard -- the textual version of folks sitting around hanging out and discussing the station...and sometimes getting sidetracked and discussing halloween costumes, etc.
nobody would ever hold up a sign that said "PWn3d!" if someone at a general meeting made a gaffe, so it's lameass to do it here too.
what i have a problem with, and i think what is the catalyst for james's outburst (if i may guess), are one-word or pointless posts and responses to everything ("yeah", "totally", "dude, ____ rules. the end", etc), dumbass internet slang or ettiquitte just-because-its-the-internet, and people who i think should be above that kind of shit being brought down to an aol-level of communication, just because they're using the internet as the medium to communicate -- that's like saying you have to get road rage and listen to "i can't drive 55" just because you're in a car.
so yeah.
i'm not into discouraging anyone to post.
posting is good.
i just think people should post smarter, not harder.

I was gonna say something retarded like "Here here!", because I totally agree with what Jyll has up there.
I would like to take it a step further however and perhaps limit who can post what/where. I honestly believe non-member posting should be restricted to the Intern Lounge and to the General Broadcast sections...and allow viewing into some of the other threads. I'm sort of open to the Music and Soapbox sections being available too...but those in particular are being badly abused right now. _________________ -Dashing Dashboard Dave Often "The Big O"
